What is CBD Oil?

CBD Oil is quite simply an oil containing Cannabidiol (CBD) - one of around 114 known cannabinoids found in the cannabis/hemp genus. Moreover its the most popular way of consuming CBD for those seeking organic alternatives to improve their wellbeing.

CBD Oil is typically created by emulsifying CBD extract into carrier oil such as hemp seed oil, fractionated coconut oil or olive oil. As CBD is a fat soluble compound the carrier oil helps us to absorb CBD into the bloodstream.

How does CBD work?

To understand how CBD works you first need to understand that all humans and most animals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a widespread network of signalling receptors found almost everywhere in the body. Their job is to regulate many critical bodily functions including pain, appetite, mood and immune response.

The ECS is effectively the human body’s homeostatic regulatory network and it is being activated within the body by naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds known as endocannabinoids. Moreover this system is being activated whether you are using cannabis based products like CBD oil or not.

The use of CBD products may provide therapeutic value by activating your cannabinoid receptors, encouraging the body to create more endocannabinoids and keep them around longer.

What kind of CBD oil is available?

There are multiple CBD oils available in our online store all with the most recent Novel Food status with the FSA. This means all our oils are approved for sale in the UK. Additionally our CBD oils are created with three kinds of extracts which each offer unique benefits.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Full Spectrum CBD Oil is unrefined and retain all the natural constituents of the hemp plant such as cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins and essential fatty acids of which each may provide therapeutic value of their own.

These earthy tasting oils are as close to the natural plant as you can get. The retention of all active constituents within these formulations is thought to provide ‘the entourage effect.’ This is the idea that retaining all the different hemp constituents allows them to work together synergistically to improve the efficacy of CBD.

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil also contains many of these naturally occurring cannabis constituents, however without any THC. These oils are much more palatable which is perfect for those averse to the taste of full spectrum oils. Moreover broad Spectrum oils present the perfect option for people who wish to experience all the benefits of CBD oil but do not want any traces of THC in their system.

CBD isolate Oil or Pure CBD oil

CBD Isolate Oil has had all of the accompanying compounds removed and the molecule of CBD isolated. This results in a 99% pure, virtually odourless white powder due to the removal of the terpenes. This extract which is also known as pure CBD, is is perfect for mixing into all sorts of CBD products. Because of the lack of other accompaning molecules, CBD Isolate, is of course, also free of THC.

Which CBD Oil is right for me?

Navigating the CBD Oil market can be tricky especially for a first time buyer. There are a lot of options on the market each with differing pros and cons therefore it is important to look at a number of factors when choosing the right CBD product for you.

Strength

CBD Oil comes in a variety of strengths which are usually displayed on the label of the product and the lab report in milligrams (mg) or as a percentage (%). This refers to how much CBD is in the finished product. When purchasing CBD for the first time it is difficult to know how it will affect you. We recommend beginning with a low dose of a medium strength oil (>500mg) and monitoring how you feel. If required you can then build up to a higher dose and purchase a stronger oil (>1000mg).

Quality Standards

The best CBD is extracted and formulated under internationally recognised quality standards such as ISO or GMP. Such products are made in a controlled environment with rigorous quality control measures that prevent adulteration of the products. ISO and GMP accreditation ensure product quality and safety by providing full traceability.

Lab Reports

Any reputable producer of CBD oil will provide a readily available certificate of analysis from an independent third party. The purpose of this COA is to certify CBD and other cannabinoid content while also confirming that the product is safe and free of pesticides, heavy metals and other residuals. Always look for a lab report/COA when purchasing CBD and avoid brands that do not provide transparency in this area.

Taste

Due to the pungent nature of cannabis (thanks to terpenes) CBD Oil can taste very earthy which can be a deterrent for some people. Those worried about or averse to the taste of CBD oil should opt for a broad spectrum, isolate or flavoured option all of which are much milder tasting.

Cost

The cost of CBD oil can vary considerably between brands therefore it may be tempting to opt for a cheaper brand. However it is important to remember that when it comes to your health and wellbeing, cheaper isn’t necessarily better. Many CBD products are ingested into the body therefore it is imperative that they are safe and free of contaminants. With that in mind it is worth investing in oil from a trusted brand with accredited manufacturing facilities, even though it may cost a little more.

THC Content

Currently the UK’s legal limit for THC content is 1mg per product and although this is not enough to get you high you may wish to not consume any THC at all. If this is the case you should look at broad spectrum or isolate based products.

Medical Claims

The Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) requires that CBD is sold as a food supplement and not a medicine. Subsequent to this, no CBD brand is permitted to make health claims about their products. We advise avoiding any brands that make such claims.

Trade Associations

There are a number of trade associations set up in the UK to help maintain consistent standards across the industry. The largest organisation The Cannabis Trades Association is the largest of its kind in the UK. Businesses that are registered with the CTA are usually reputable and will subsequently provide safe and compliant products.

You can shop with confidence at Hemptations as we are a registered CTA Stockist.

How to take CBD Oil

Oils and tinctures are is also one of the most effective routes of administration for getting CBD into the bloodstream. The oil is administered orally via pipette or spray once or twice per day under the tongue and left to sit for 90 seconds before swallowing.

This will allow CBD and other cannabinoids to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream via the oral mucosa. This sublingual technique enables CBD and other fat soluble cannabinoids to avoid liver metabolism where they will be broken down and not distributed around the body. The effects are normally felt within about 20 minutes and can last as long as six hours.

CBD Oil Dosage

CBD has an extraordinarily broad, safe and effective dosing window with each person having a unique optimal dose. The best way to find your optimal dose is to start low with a few drops per day and monitor how your body reacts. After that begin adding a drop or two every couple of days if needed until you find your ‘sweet spot.’

FAQs

Will CBD Oil get me high?

CBD will not make you high as it is not the compound within cannabis that is responsible for the high. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the compound responsible and although a small amount may remain in full spectrum formulations, it is not enough to provide any impairment.

In the UK, the maximum amount of THC allowed in any finished container is 1mg. While this is not enough to get you high, some may wish to not consumer any THC at all. In this case you should choose THC Free oil such as broad spectrum or isolate based products.

Is CBD legal?

Despite the convoluted nature of UK cannabis regulations, CBD oil is completely legal and does not violate the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1971. In order for CBD to be deemed legal it must have been extracted from one of 63 approved industrial hemp strains and contain no more than 1mg THC per product.

To allay concerns, you can view the product lab report to ensure it contains a legal limit of THC. Once again, brands who do not publish their lab reports should be avoided; why take a chance?
