What is Full Spectrum CBD?
As mentioned above, full spectrum CBD is as close to the natural plant as you can get in an extract. If extracted correctly, it will retain all of the wonderful constituents that the cannabis sativa plant contains. Broadly speaking the plant contains three main families of wellness molecules, we break these down below:
Cannabinoids are the most studied family of wellness molecules found within the cannabis plant. You are likely familiar with the two most prominent cannabinoids THC and CBD. However there are over 100 known cannabinoids that are currently being studied for their wellness capabilities. These inimitable molecules activate our cannabinoid receptors in a number of ways in order to restore balance within the body. You can learn more about the functioning of your endocannabinoid system here
Terpenes are the aromatic wellness molecules that are responsible for the characteristic scent of many plants throughout nature. Cannabis is no different, in fact it exhibits a high terpene count as evident by its pungent, notorious scent. Terpenes aren't just for smell however, in nature they deter potential predators and protect the plant from infectious germs. In addition to this they also interact with our bodies' enocannabinoid system improving the efficacy of any CBD oil.
The third main family of wellness molecules found with the cannabis plant and retained in full spectrum oil are flavonoids. Like terpenes, flavonoids are not unique to the cannabis plant and are found throughout nature from flowers to fruits. They are responsible for the pigmentation of cannabis and other fruits such as the blue in blueberrys or the red in raspberries for example.
While flavonoids are found throughout nature in general, there are some flavonoids (cannflavins) that are unique to the cannabis plant.. Two of the most noteable cannflavins are cannflavin A and cannflavin B which are both being investigated for their anti-inflammatory properties. Sky News recently reported that they are "pain-relieving cannabis molecules 30 times more powerful than aspirin."
All of the above components are present in a full spectrum CBD product and work synergistically in a phenomenon known as "the entourage effect." This means greater benefits for you upon consuming a full spectrum oil.
